There is a great article on the Times website about the benefits of swimming.

Some of the benefits they list include:

People with osteoarthritis, who cannot do weight-bearing exercises, benefit from swimming

Lowers blood pressure in people with hypertension

The coolness and buoyancy of the water appeals to people that are overweight or people that load-bearing aerobic exercises like running may be too hot or uncomfortable
